7 ways to make your business card designs seriously stand out

A great business card does more than share your contact details; it creates a lasting tactile and visual impression for your customers. And being a printer, we see A LOT of business card designs come through our doors, so we know a thing or two about how to really make them pop…

1. Use foiling for high-impact shine

Foiling adds a reflective metallic finish to selected parts of your design. Gold, silver, rose gold, and even holographic foils instantly elevate a card, making logos or key text catch your eye. And, if you pair the foil with a minimalist layout, the shine becomes the hero.

2. Add texture with embossing & debossing

Embossing raises elements; debossing presses them inward. Both create a tactile experience people feel before they even consciously look at the design. This encourages interaction and helps highlight logos or patterns before you even add ink. For an ultra-premium effect, combine embossing with foiling and showcase your luxe style.

3. Make your colours pop with spot colour printing

Spot colours use pre-mixed inks (like Pantone) for ultra-accurate, ultra-vibrant hues you can’t always get from standard CMYK printing. Think bold neons and metallic hues. But make sure to use this technique sparingly so the saturation becomes a focal point rather than overwhelming the design.

4. Try die cutting for unique shapes

Die cutting lets you break free from standard rectangles. Circles, rounded corners, geometric cutouts — anything that reinforces your brand’s personality. This will instantly create memorability. Our recommendation is to keep the layout clean so the die cut becomes the star.

5. Use thick or multi-layered card stock

A thicker card feels premium and durable in the hand. Multi-layered cards (or duplex as we call it in the trade) often feature a contrasting coloured core for a bold, unexpected detail. This technique looks and feels premium without the price tag. Coloured edges subtly attract attention and signal real quality.

6. Don’t print on paper

Wood, plastic, cotton, metal — the list goes on. Unconventional materials leave a strong impression and align well with certain brand aesthetics. This kind of business card is memorable, distinctive and goes beyond expectations.

7. Use bold, modern layouts

Even without special printing techniques, a brave design can stand out. Oversized typography, vibrant gradients, asymmetric layouts, or ultra-minimal styles create strong visual identities. Plus, it’ll likely be the most cost-effective option for you if you’re printing with a budget.

Final tips to maximise impact

  • Combine techniques, but don’t overdo it — pick one or two heroes.

  • Focus on your brand personality — playful, elegant, bold? Your card should embody it.

  • Consider the tactile experience as much as visual design.

  • Make it memorable — the goal of a business card is to be kept, not tossed.
